Arrived yesterday in Helsinki, which at 60 degrees latitude, enjoys long and light filled summer days. Peter Martin, a friend of Allegra’s from McGill and long time resident of Helsinki, is generously hosting me in his great flat and spent the afternoon showing me around this beautiful city.
Downtown Helsinki from what appeared to be the tallest building around, a 13 floor Art Deco hotel.

The many colors of Iittala Finnish glass design
Atrium of book store Dedigned by Alvar Henrik Aalto, famed Finnish architect and designer.
Not a harbor side cafe, a carpet washing station. Seriously, people come here and scrub carpets on these tables with sea water and a biodegradable pine scented soap and then leave them to dry on racks.
Very cool city, and now it’s on my list. Their carpets are obviously cleaner than mine….

Delightful! All of it. I want to move to Helsinki so that I may wash my rugs and do other some such chores in such beauty. Bon voyage on the start of your journey, Gabe!
