Split to Korčula, Croatia

Back on the road! After a late night getting Allegra’s bike put together, we awoke early, said goodbye and thank you to Dean (giving my bike a try below), the quiet fixer who miraculously got Allegra’s bike delivered to the bus station last night, and hopped on a ferry to Vela Luka, on the island of Korčula.

The crossing was beautiful, with the deep blue Adriatic Sea sparkling in the sun.

Arriving on Korčula, we bought some fruit and set off on the gorgeous narrow island roads, which climb up olive and cypress tree covered hills and meander past turquoise bays.

It felt wonderful to be back in the bike after a few days of rest, my legs reinvigorated, and this beautiful part of the world slowly unfolding in front of us. Along the country roads we ate fresh figs right off the trees and perfect green grapes, bursting with sunshine and sweetness. By early evening we had cycled the length of the island and arrived in the town of Korčula, where (after a steep hike up the narrow stairs) we checked into a little “soba” complete with a backyard garden. Just in case it isn’t obvious, since Allegra joined me, I feel like I have gotten an upgrade!

The owner was quite interested in our bike adventure and welcomed us with a bottle of her family’s wine from 90 year old vines. A lovely dinner, complete with a beautiful sunset, finished off a great day.

  1. Warming to see you two reunited! And to heat the Friday was retrieved and repaired! And those views! So wonderful to see. I am missing some food porn though…and I’m not talking figs! Looking for a pastry or few here, brother… Hello, Calder!
