Unfortunately the wildfire smoke isn’t getting any better. We head out from Sematan and visibility is about half a kilometer. We catch glimpses of jungle hillsides and it’s obvious that Sarawak Province and Borneo are beautiful when not shrouded in haze, but it’s not healthy for us to be cycling in these conditions.

We ride 30 kilometers back to Lundu, put our bikes in the back of a truck and get a ride back to Kuching from the lovely couple that runs the “Louis Vuitton” hotel where we stayed two nights ago.

Back in Kuching, we learn that this area currently has the worst air quality in the world. We decide to cut the trip short. One of the experiences we have most looked forward to is a long boat river trip through Batang Ai National Park, deep into the Borneo jungle. We will spend the next three days in Batang Ai and then fly home. We feel a bit sad but it’s the right decision.

Ah, to dream of the gentle snows of the Yukon Territory!

Dear Gabe and Allegra,
Sad to hear this news but also glad you are taking care of yourselves.
I have appreciated the glimpses of Borneo these past few days, your pictures and stories are beautiful. Enjoy whatever adventures lay ahead (there will be some)!
Blessings to you both– Carole (from the gym)

Oofah. Sending you two and everyone there lots of love. Imagine the park will be incredible nonetheless. And perhaps you’ll stop somewhere else on the way back toward home for an impromptu adventure…?
